Divisions allow a more competitive pairing of teams, leading to more competitive and entertaining outcomes.

In a double-elimination tournament with 16 teams in one division, the teams are initially divided into two brackets: the winners’ bracket and the losers’ bracket. Each team starts in the winners’ bracket.

Each team will compete in multiple games throughout the tournament until eliminated. The format guarantees each team at least two games, as they must lose twice to be eliminated.

The tournament progresses as follows:

1. Round 1: All 16 teams in the winners’ bracket play against each other. The winners of each match proceed to the next round, while the losers drop to the losers’ bracket.
– Total games: 8 games

2. Round 2 (Winners’ bracket): The eight remaining teams in the winners’ bracket compete against each other. The winners advance to the next round, while the losers move to the losers’ bracket.
– Total games: 4 games

3. Round 2 (Losers’ bracket): The eight teams that lost in round 1 of the winners’ bracket compete against each other in the losers’ bracket. The winners of these matches stay in the tournament, while the losers are eliminated.
– Total games: 4 games

4. Round 3 (Winners’ bracket): The four remaining teams in the winners’ bracket play against each other. The winners proceed to the next round, and the losers drop to the losers’ bracket.
– Total games: 2 games

5. Round 3 (Losers’ bracket): The four teams that lost in round 2 of the winners’ bracket compete against each other in the losers’ bracket. The winners continue in the tournament, while the losers are eliminated.
– Total games: 2 games

6. Round 4 (Winners’ bracket): The two remaining teams in the winners’ bracket face off against each other. The winner advances to the championship match, while the loser drops to the losers’ bracket.
– Total games: 1 game

7. Round 4 (Losers’ bracket): The two teams that lost in round 3 (Winners’ bracket) compete against each other in the losers’ bracket. The winner earns a spot in the championship match, while the loser is eliminated.
– Total games: 1 game

8. Championship match: The winner of the winner’s bracket and the winner of the losers’ bracket face off in the final game. The team that wins this match is crowned the tournament champion.
– Total games: 1 game

In total, there are 23 games played to determine the champion.

The minimum number of games each team plays is 2, as they have to lose twice to be eliminated.

The maximum number of games each team plays is 6, in the scenario where they win every match until the championship round but then lose that match.
